Can I use tools like Grammarly when writing my assignment?

Answer

Grammarly is a computer program that assists people in writing and proofreading document content, and there are various free and paid-for versions of the software.

Using Grammarly for its basic spelling and grammar checking features is fine, but it is your responsibility to ensure that the software does not rewrite parts of your work for you while checking your work.

Recent developments in the software have meant that all versions of Grammarly now also offer generative AI features, which give the user the option of having the software rewrite parts of their work for them. Using these generative AI features (whether on the free or paid-for versions) is not allowed, and will likely result in an allegation of academic misconduct.

If you have been given access to Grammarly Go as an assistive technology, then you will receive guidance on permitted uses from the university.

Please note there is a range of software available that is designed to assist with writing. This guidance applies to any software you may be using (not only Grammarly).

For more details on how generative artificial intelligence can and should not be used, refer to the University's Statement on the use of AI in Assessment, available on our Artificial Intelligence webpage.
