How to perform a search in Lexis+

1. Legal Research

Lexis+ searches everything in our subscription and uses its algorithm to rank your results.

Create a search
  • Enter your search term. As you type, you will see suggested searches, documents and sources below the box.
  • You can choose a content category to display first, but unless you add filters, your search runs across all available categories.
  • You can save your search and add or remove suggested terms below the search box.

Search methods

Lexis+ automatically finds different forms of many words (e.g., plurals). You can control this using quotation marks and wildcard symbols. These work in both Natural Language and Terms and Connectors searches.

  • Automatic stemming. Lexis+ will automatically search for plurals and related word forms.
  • Exact matches. Use double quotation marks to search for an exact word or phrase (i.e., "amend" or "surviving spouse").
  • Wildcards help you to include variations of a root word or replace unknown characters.

Wildcard symbols:

! (exclamation mark)      * (asterisk)           ? (question mark)

► Search for a term, for example, "criminal trespass", and click the search button. The category menu on the top left of the page shows that were retrieved, the secondary sources, cases, legislations and more. Results in each category are ranked by relevance.

2. Practical Guidance

Lexis+ lets you browse by practice area, topic, or task, or run a search. You can filter your results at any time to quickly reach Overviews, Practice Notes, Forms, Q&As, Checklists and Flowcharts, Precedents, and News. Click any title to explore.

You can follow the steps above to run your search.
