What is natural language search and how do I use it?

Natural Language Search is an AI-powered search mode designed to make searching easier and more intuitive by allowing you to enter queries in everyday language, similar to how you would type a question into a search engine like Google.

With the natural language option on the Library Portal search you can enter simple statements, questions, and research topics in the search bar and EBSCO’s AI will convert these into an advanced keyword search, automatically identifying and searching for relevant terms and using Boolean operators.

Show refined query

Once you have run a natural language search, you can click Show refined query underneath the search bar to see the full search that’s been constructed in the background. This can also be a good way to find additional or alternative keywords and search terms that you might not have previously considered.

You can still use the advanced search option to create your own searches with your preferred keywords and Boolean operators but natural language searching can ease the stress of trying to craft the perfect search, especially when you are new to Library searching, or are starting out with an unfamiliar research topic.

We recommend starting out with natural language searching when starting your research, then switching it off using the toggle option when you’re looking for specific eBooks or journal articles.
