Getting Started with Orbis

__________________________________

Orbis is a global business database that provides detailed information on over 400 million companies worldwide, including both public and private firms. It offers standardized data on financial performance, ownership structures, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate hierarchies. Students can use Orbis to:

  • Research companies by size, industry, region, or financial indicators.
  • Build datasets for academic projects and export them to Excel.
  • Analyse trends in global markets, corporate governance, and financial health.

Orbis is ideal for assignments in business, economics, finance, and management because it combines comprehensive coverage with powerful search and filtering tools.

How to search Orbis

  1. Use the search function to enter your search criteria

  2. Apply search filters to refine your results. These filters help narrow the scope of your search. Examples of filter criteria include:
    • Company type (public, private, non-profit)
    • Geography (country or region)
    • Industry
    • Financial Metrics (performance indicators like revenue, profit, or employee count)

  3. Click on the search button to display the results. You can view summary reports for each company. For more in-depth information, select a company name to access its comprehensive report.

  4. Exporting data. If you need to download data, check for export options that allow you to save the information in different formats, such as Excel (.xlsx) or CSV (.csv). Exporting data in these formats is particularly useful for further analysis, creating reports, or sharing information with others.
