Can Academic Skills Tutors help me with my dissertation or independent research project?

Answer

Yes, we can! But keep in mind that your supervisor will always be the best person to help you with your dissertation or research project.

Part of the initial stages of your research project or dissertation involves being assigned a project supervisor.

Your supervisor will have expert knowledge of the topic you have chosen to research, and so will be able to guide you in terms of the best practice in your field. Your supervisor is therefore the best person to consult about your research project or dissertation.

However, if you feel you would like some additional support and feedback on your research project or dissertation, then you are welcome to book an Academic Skills Tutor appointment.

Academic Skills Tutors (ASTs) can provide feedback on 500 words of your research project/dissertation per appointment. Students can meet with an AST twice to discuss their work.

If you would like more general support, for example, understanding how to use the Library for research or how to reference in a specific style, then you can book additional appointments.

In addition to appointments, the Academic Skills Team have some useful resources available on the following pages on the Learning Success Hub website:

  • Dissertation Research  – guidance on choosing a topic, structuring your research, and using databases.
  • Academic Writing –  writing style, referencing, and structuring your dissertation

Relevant online academic skills workshops, which are available to all students, are also suggested at the bottom of these pages.
