What are academic skills appointments and how can they help me?

Answer

Academic Skills Tutors are available to work with you on a one-to-one basis to help you develop your academic skills. In a one-to-one appointment, you and your Academic Skills Tutor will discuss which areas of your work you would like to improve.

Some of the skills that ASTs can help you develop include:

Academic Skills Tutors (ASTs) can also provide feedback on up to 500 words of an assignment draft. You can meet with an AST twice to discuss a specific assignment.

Keep in mind that ASTs can't provide feedback on your subject content - this is something that your module lecturer can help you with in their formative feedback. However, ASTs will provide valuable feedback on the structure, style, and academic voice of the assignment. They can also provide feedback on your referencing and critical use of sources.

If you would like some feedback from an AST, or if you have more general academic skills-related questions, book an appointment with someone from our team. To give yourself time to use any feedback an AST gives you, be sure to book your appointment a few days before your submission deadline or sooner

Appointments last 45 minutes and are available on campus and online.
